At the time of writing, The Oman Bird List records sightings of 536 bird species, belonging to 76 of the 231 families that exist in the world. Some of these are endemic to Oman and the Arabian Peninsula, and constitute five per cent of the total number of species that are to be found worldwide. Such figures demonstrate how Oman holds a special place in the region; it is situated at the Migration crossroads of three main regions, and also lies on the routes followed by numerous different species of seabirds.
